Should You Paint or Stain Cedar Siding?

If the cedar is bare or wears a semi-transparent stain now, stay with stain. If it already carries solid stain or paint, it is a painted house and the honest path is to keep it that way. Semi-transparent shows the grain and needs recoating more often; solid stain and paint hide the wood and last longer per coat, but they build a film that eventually peels and has to be scraped.

What Drives the Cost of Exterior Painting in the Northwest Metro?

Siding type and condition, how much prep the old paint needs, how many stories and how hard the walls are to reach, and whether the color is changing. Those four move an exterior painting estimate more than anything else. Two estimates for the same house usually differ in the prep and the number of coats, because one painter priced the whole job and the other priced a coat of paint.

Before You List, What Do Buyers Want to See?

Buyers want a house that looks cared for, and paint is the fastest way to show that. Fresh neutral walls, clean white trim and doors, and a front door and garage door that are not chalking do most of the work. Start with the main floor and the street side of the house, and skip the bold colors.

Eco-Friendly Paint Options for Your Home: Low-VOC and Zero-VOC Explained

For most interior work, a low-VOC or zero-VOC waterborne paint is the eco-friendly option, and it is now the standard rather than a specialty product. It matters most in bedrooms, nurseries and any winter job when the windows stay shut. Outside and on cabinets, the sustainable choice is the coating that lasts longest, because the paint you do not have to reapply is the greenest paint there is.

DIY vs. Professional Painting: What You Need to Know

Painting a bedroom yourself is a reasonable weekend project. Painting the outside of a two-story house, spraying cabinet doors, or repainting siding that is peeling to bare wood is where DIY usually costs more than it saves, because the hard part of those jobs is the prep, the primer and the application, not the paint.

When Is Exterior Painting Season in Minnesota?

Exterior painting season in Minnesota runs from roughly early May to mid-October. Paint needs the siding and the air above about 50 F, and it needs the overnight low to stay above the dew point while the coat sets, which rules out most of April and everything after the first hard frost. We book exteriors in order starting in May, and by early summer the calendar is full.

Fall Home Maintenance Checklist: Painting, Caulking and Repairs

Fall in Minnesota is for sealing the house before freeze-up: recaulk the joints that opened over summer, spot-prime any bare wood while the siding is still above 50 F in the afternoon, and touch up the doors and trim that took the most sun. Full repaints belong in summer. Fall is for the small paint and caulk work that keeps water out until spring.

Paint Color Trends for 2025: What We See on Northwest Metro Homes

We do not forecast colors; we paint what people pick. On northwest metro exteriors in 2025 that has been dark siding with white or cream trim, black windows, and a lot of deep green front doors. Inside, cool gray is out and warm white and soft greige are in on the main floor, with the color moving to cabinets, built-ins and mudrooms instead of accent walls.
